A beautiful encyclopedia of music, containing a wealth of information. There are many illustrations, and hundreds of detailed analyses of composers, musical genres and periods. The encyclopedia tends to concentrate on these areas rather than the technical side of music - it is more a musicological history reference book, with little concentration on, say, the instruments of the orchestra. Nevertheless, this book is a useful reference work, and should be added to any serious musician's library.
