This is undoubtedly the best modern study of Gilbert from a literary-critical point of view. Sutton covers the full range of Gilbert's output, which is remarkable enough: what is more, he does so with great intelligence and understanding. I think he pushes the idea of Gilbert as radical satirist a bit too much, but there's no doubt the evidence is there to support his arguments.
If you are interested in Gilbert as a writer, it will be a revelation to you.
