This book is a "bible" for all those interested in the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company. It lists company members, the years in which they appeared, the rôles they played, together with brief biographical details where these are known.
The aim of the work is to list all the performers who worked with any D'Oyly Carte stage company from 1875 until 1982. Non-performing staff have not been listed, unless they held performing contracts at some stage; nor have orchestra members, with the exception of Musical Directors.
In the author's own words : "The Rollins and Witts volume [The D'Oyly Carte Opera Company - a record of productions, compiled by Cyril Rollins and R John Witts (1962)] has been much drawn upon, but the names therein have been greatly added to by the inclusion of a number of choristers in the early days".
