W S Gilbert would have loved this book ! It casts an affectionate glance at the essence of Japan - an impressionist glimpse which gives you the flavour without cloying the palate.
Robert Ainsley has lived in Japan, and so he writes with authority. He deals in turn with the country, the people, travel, leisure, culture and the language. It is very difficult to tell where truth ends and satire begins, which accounts for this book's appeal.
